| Parakeet cages come in all shapes
and sizes. Some look like furniture, some are simply practical.
After deciding what important features you want included in your
parakeet's new home (see Choosing
a Cage), you will want to shop for the type of cage that fits
your preferences, decor and budget.
Powder-coated Cages
Although powder-coated painted cages are considerably less expensive
than stainless steel, they don't last as long. Careful cleaning
by soaking and using non-abrasive cleaning agents and sponges
will lengthen the life of the cage. They are sturdy and come in
a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Make sure the manufacturer
states that the cage is non-toxic.
Stainless Steel Cages
These cages are easy to clean, non-toxic and will last
for years. Although they are expensive, the initial investment
will pay off over time if you plan to have birds for many years.
If you decide to invest in this type of cage for your bird, make
sure it is 100% 304 grade solid stainless steel.
Plastic Coated Wire Cages
While these are the least expensive types of bird cages, they
can be toxic if your parakeet likes to chew on the bars of the
cage. Care must be taken to make sure none of the plastic is chipping
away exposing toxic metal beneath. They are easy to clean, affordable
and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
